Learning outcomes:
Mechanisms of Viral Entry:
- Students will be able to explain the different mechanisms by which viruses enter host cells, including endocytosis, membrane fusion, and direct penetration.
- Students will analyze how specific viral proteins interact with host cell receptors to facilitate viral entry.
Viral Genome Replication:
- Students will compare and contrast the replication strategies of DNA viruses, RNA viruses, and retroviruses.
- Students will describe the roles of viral and host enzymes in the replication of viral genomes.
Transcription and Translation of Viral Genes:
- Students will understand the processes of viral mRNA transcription and translation, and how these processes differ among various types of viruses.
- Students will be able to explain how viruses hijack host cell machinery to produce viral proteins.
Assembly and Release of New Virions:
- Students will be able to describe the processes involved in the assembly of new viral particles.
- Students will explain the different methods by which viruses are released from host cells, including budding, lysis, and exocytosis.
