Why do we classify viruses?

Virus taxonomy is important because it allows the clinical, biological and evolutionary features of a virus to be placed into a framework that accommodates and connects all viruses.

–To be able to communicate with each other

• The better the classification system, the fewer explanatory words are needed

–To assemble like members with each other

• It is important to identify the qualities that are considered in a classification scheme
