Viral genetics is the study of the mechanisms of heritable information in viruses

Viruses grow rapidly within the cell leading to:

• increased chances for mutations
• continuous changes due to genetic selection
• major genetic changes occur as a result of recombination

The nature of the viral genome (RNA or DNA; segmented or non-segmented)

• plays an important role in the genetics of the virus
