Students

Teaching is the main role at the Sokoine University of Agriculture where I impart knowledge to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students

TEACHING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

I teach and supervise them on their special research projects conducted during their final year of studies.

a) Virology

1. Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (I teach Veterinary Virology on average 200 students yearly)

The programme produces qualified and practically competent veterinary doctors to develop the livestock industry, public health sector, and biomedical research and improve the living standards of the people. Vet doctors can perform accurate clinical signs, and diagnoses and provide treatment of the common diseases and disorders that occur in the common domestic species. The doctors are prepared to be entrepreneurs, technical advisors, veterinary clinical officers and animal surgeons. These doctors swear to professional conduct and to reduce animal pains

2. Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Laboratory Science (I teach virology and Diagnostic Virology on average 250 students yearly)

The programme produces a cadre of laboratory technologists who will be capable to supervise and manage diagnostic, research, and training laboratories. These graduates can work and meet the demand of the public and private sectors involved in biomedical, biotechnology research and development in health, agriculture, forensics, pharmaceuticals, environment and food industries. These experts are made to produce reliable and accurate scientific information and use high-tech laboratory instruments

3. Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture (I teach section of Virology in Aquatic Microbiology course on average 200 students yearly)

The programme produces highly qualified graduates competent in aquatic organisms farming using contemporary and sustainable aquaculture techniques and science. Graduates are capable of both employment and self-employment in aquaculture and related firms, provide technical advice in aquaculture systems in smallholder and large scale production settings

4. Bachelor of Science in Animal Science (I teach section of Virology in Animal Microbiology course on average 300 students yearly)

The programme produces graduates capable of effectively managing the livestock sector and provides technical advice and self-employment in sustainable livestock production. To smallholder farmers and large-scale livestock systems. Graduates are competent in poultry, dairy, beef cattle, piggery, and small ruminant nutrition, health, and breeding for enhanced quality and productivity.

b) Cell and Tissue Culture Techniques

1. Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Laboratory Science (on average 250 students yearly)

TEACHING POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

The courses I teach are Advanced Virology, Diagnostic Virology, Medical Microbiology and Virology and Emerging and re-emerging diseases and Zoonoses. But I also supervise MSc. and PhD in their research projects which is part and parcel of their studies at the University.

  1. Masters of Science in Applied Microbiology (I teach Advanced Virology, Diagnostic Virology, Medical Microbiology and Virology): Graduates will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of (i) the molecular basis of microbial disease pathogenesis (ii) research methods in applied microbiology (iii) roles of microbes, in bio-engineering, bio-processing and bio-remediation and (iv) host defence mechanisms against microbes.
  2.  Master of Science in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (I teach Advanced Virology): Graduates should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of (i) new concepts in molecular biology and biotechnology and (ii) research methods in molecular biology and biotechnology.
  3. Master of Science in One Health Molecular Biology (I teach Advanced Virology and Emerging and re-emerging diseases and Zoonoses): This programme focuses on practical skills and a thorough understanding of how to apply molecular biology to One Health – an emerging discipline which promotes collaboration between specialists in the public, animal and environmental/ecosystems health sectors. The International One Health Initiative has defined One Health as: “the integrative effort of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally, and globally to attain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment. Together, the three make up the One Health triad, and the health of each is inextricably connected to the others in the triad”.
  4. Masters of Science in Parasitology (I teach Medical Microbiology and Virology and Emerging and re-emerging diseases and Zoonoses): Graduates should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of (i) ecological factors associated with parasitic diseases of man, domestic and wild animals, (ii) methods for diagnosis and control of parasitic diseases of man, domestic and wild animals and (iii) research methods in parasitology.
  5. Master of Philosophy (I supervise research): The programme is offered by research only, for two years on a full-time basis leading to a thesis.
  6. PhD Programme (I supervise research): The programme is offered by research only, for four years on a full-time basis leading to a thesis.
