Diseases That Literally Change You – The Most Disfiguring Diseases

A lot of people care about their physical appearances more than anything. So anything that is bound to disfigure their looks is treated as an absolute disaster. But it's a bad symptom that a lot of us just can not get over, judging people according to physical appearance. This has been a source of a lot of the strife in the world. And unfortunately some people get judged based on such things that are completely beyond their control such as the ravages of illness. And really, there are some illnesses that can disfigure you not just internally but externally as well.

Here are some of the illnesses that can really change your appearance in a bad way. Let's all just be thankful that we do not have these crippling ailments:

– Smallpox: This is a highly infectious disease that is caused by the Variola major virus or its variants. The first few symptoms are similar to colds and influenza. And 12 to 15 days after the initial infection, the pox or lesions start appearing. These pox are like acne but grow and burst overtime, spreading the virus through the body. Though successfully eliminated from nature, survivors are usually left to deal with the physical and emotional pain caused by the lesions.

– Leprosy: This is one of the most recorded diseases ever, with even texts like the Bible recognizing its horrible effects. Leprosy or Hansen's disease was a huge source of stigma, with colonies of lepers being created in isolated islands, separate from the population at large before a cure was discovered in 1940.

– Elephantiasis: This disease is characterized by the hardening of the skin and inflammation in the leg and genital areas. It is seriously disfiguring in such a way that the skin bloats until it is about the same as that of an elephant. It is the most extreme form of lymphatic filariasis, which is caused by small parasites transmitted through mosquito bites.
