Facts About SARS
SARS simply means severe acute respiratory syndrome. It is the sudden appearance of a severe respiratory disease, and its typical type of pneumonia and the origin is viral. This disease was first reported in China in April 2003 and has spread to other countries like Hong-Kong, Taiwan, USA, Vietnam and Singapore. There has been a link according to scientist between patients with SARS and a previously unrecognized Corona-virus.
There are many ways this disease can spread, but the primary way is by person to person contact. Those taking care of loved one that are living with SARS are likely to contact this disease, so also anyone that comes into direct contact with infectious materials from a person that has SARS. Touching the body (skin) of someone infected with SARS or an object that is already contaminated with infectious droplets and then using that same hand to touch the eyes, nose or mouth spreads the disease further. This happens when a person infected with SARS cough or sneezes droplets upon themselves, other people or nearby places.
There is the possibility that this deadly disease can be spread through the air or by other means, though, this is not yet established.
Generally, SARS begins with high fever of about100.4'f (38.0'c) or even above. This will be followed by other symptoms like headache, general feeling of discomfort and body aches. In some cases, you will notice mild respiratory symptoms. This develops to dry cough and trouble breathing.
There is no known cure yet for this disease because a lot still needs to be known or understood about this virus. However, several antibiotics have been included by some medical experts to be used in treating pneumonia. In some cases, antiviral agents such as oseltamivir or ribavirin therapy have been applied. There have equally been combinations of rivambirin and orintravenous administration to some patients.
Washing the hand constantly with soap and water or alcohol based solutions especially, after using the toilet and before eating is very important. Also, it is good to desist from touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unclean hands. Avoid sharing utensils. Use disinfectant to constantly clean the house. The use of bleach and ammonia or alcohol agents can equally kill disease and germs that have similar bio chemical agent with SARS.
Encourage everyone around you to use tissue to cover the mouth and nose when sneezing. If you think that you have SARS, or you notice the symptoms, those around you should wear surgical masks and this must be changed daily or when soiled. SARS patients must be quarantined.
