Genital Warts and Herpes – What Are the Differences?

One misconception that people have is that genital warts and herpes are the same thing. Many people often think they are the same thing because of how similar the two diseases are. Despite the similarities in the diseases, it is important to know the differences between the two. Knowing the differences between genital warts and herpes is important because you want to ensure that you are getting the proper treatment.

One of the biggest differences between genital warts and herpes is that two different viruses cause them, but sadly, neither virus is curable. The human papilloma virus is responsible for genital warts, while the herpes simplex virus is responsible for herpes. One of the worst things about these viruses being different is that you can actually become infected by both viruses at the same time.

Another big difference between the two viruses is in how they develop. With herpes, you simply deal with outbreaks, which can happen at any time. During the outbreak, you will notice the herpes lesions in your genitals, but after the outbreak they go away. The herpes sores will get so big and then burst, and once they burst they simply dry up and go away until the next outbreak. Genital warts on the other hand never burst or go away, they will continue to grow until they are removed. Unless treated with the proper medication they are almost difficult to get rid of.

The last difference between the two viruses is how they are treated; each virus must be treated differently. These tedious warts can be removed with medical cream, surgery or even by freezing them off. In order to remove the warts you must be seen by a doctor. Herpes on the other hand does not require medical attention because they will burst on their own. However, herpes outbreaks can be rather painful, so medication can be used to help relieve the pain.
